About

As you know, some nicknames begin as a joke that catches on. My Honi (Husband) calls me Lulua'ina. But thanks to my Son and his little friends, I am also Auntie Frizzle. As he says, "I have freckles, red curly hair (usually have tied up in a tita bun) and I know lots of stuff." Eventually, I moved past the acceptance stage and learned to embrace the comparison. So the name Miz Frizzle just stuck in our ohana. And like Ms. Frizzle, I also consider myself to be a bit of an Eco-Warrior.

After starting a laundry business, I decided I wanted to try to head off some environmental issues by helping to create a stronger market for Recycled Textiles. When I asked my Ohana what to call the website, they all suggested Holo-Holo but that it should have blurbs from my Frizzle avatar. And thus Holo-Holo was born.

Mission

At Holo-Holo, our mission is to create a stronger market for recycled textiles. Our T-shirts and Active Travel Wear are crafted from organic and recycled cotton, as well as rPET (recycled polyester). With every purchase, you contribute to reducing landfill waste and conserving millions of gallons of water in production. Together, we can make a difference—Go Green or Go Home!

What Does Lulua'ina Mean?

The name Lulua’ina has very special meanings for our ohana. It means “freckles” in Hawaiian, but for us, it symbolizes beauty that is overlooked or taken for granted.  In fact, in the old Polynesian roots, lulua refers to “pure flowers” and ina means to vary in color, shape and texture. This reminds me of the saying “stop and smell the roses“.

I used to be self-conscious about my freckles. My husband, however, thinks they are one my many attractive features that make me beautiful and special. Kama’aina (local residents of Hawai’i) know the Hawaiian islands are special. But occasionally, we forget about some of the little things that make the islands so beautiful and special.

We are thankful to be able to go for holoholo and see new places with eyes of wonder and amazement. So to express our aloha and say mahalo to our visitors, we named our company Lulua’ina.
